Symmetry Breaking in Seed-Mediated Silver Nanorod Growth Induced by Dimethyl Sulfoxide

چکیده
Engineering symmetry breaking in seed-mediated growth is a fundamental challenge to produce colloidal nanocrystals with controlled morphologies and properties. In this work, we show simple, aqueous approach the inversion of silver nanorods by restricting one end pentatwinned gold bipyramid seed. Controlled addition dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) allows us tune both length width objects. Simulations experiments demonstrate adsorption DMSO, which displaces interfacial water, reduces binding surfactant chloride ions at surface, slows down deposition kinetics silver. Besides showing potential DMSO for controlling synthesis complex nanostructures, work opens new perspectives study physical properties noncentrosymmetric nanoparticles, e.g., their plasmon modes second-harmonic generation efficiency.

The physical, chemical and optical properties of nano-scale colloids depend on their material composition, size and shape. There is a great interest in using nano-colloids for photo-thermal ablation, drug delivery and many other biomedical applications. Gold is particularly used because of its low toxicity. A property of metal nano-colloids is that they can have a strong surface plasmon resonan...
متن کاملAngular Symmetry Breaking Induced by Electromagnetic Field
It is well known that velocities does not commute in presence of an electromagnetic field. This property implies that angular algebra symmetries, such as the sO(3) and Lorentz algebra symmetries, are broken. To restore these angular symmetries we show the necessity of adding the Poincaré momentum M to the simple angular momentum L. These restorations performed succesively in a flat space and in...
متن کاملStabilization of enveloped viruses by dimethyl sulfoxide.
In a recent review on the storage of animal viruses at subzero temperatures (8), it was pointed out that enveloped viruses present special problems. For example, herpesvirus even at -90 C loses infectivity after prolonged storage and at -20 C is even more labile than at 4 C. Repeated freezings and thawings of this virus result in marked loss in activity. Members of the herpesvirus group can be ...
متن کاملAlteration of myoblast phenotype by dimethyl sulfoxide.
Application of dimethyl sulfoxide to proliferating L8 myoblasts (an established cell line of rat skeletal muscle) for 72 hr completely prevented fusion and induction of creatine phosphokinase (EC 2.7.3.2) activity (an indicator of muscle differentiation). The growth pattern changed from the usual sheets of randomly oriented cells to flattened, whorled monolayers of elongated fibroblast-like cel...
متن کاملDFT study of dimers of dimethyl sulfoxide in gas phase
Density functional (DFT) calculations at M05-2x/aug-cc-pVDZ level were used to analyze the interactions between dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) dimers. The structures obtained have been analyzed with the Atoms in Molecules (AIMs) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) methodologies. Four minima were located on the potential energy surface of the dimers. Three types of interactions are observed, CH•••O, CH•••...
